How does Peter's venom work?

The venom itself, straight from Peter's body, works in 3 stages, and the immediate effect largely depends on the hormonal state of the person being bitten/ingesting it + the dosage.

People ingesting/being bitten in high states of adrenaline/excitement usually start at the second stage.

STAGES:

Performance Enhancer: For a short burst of time, Peter's venom enhances the body. For most people, that means time moves more slowly (brain works faster), they feel things more intensely, are stronger, faster, feel less pain etc- and for superpowered humans, their abilities are enhanced.

Paralysis: Eventually, the body's processes move so quickly that the victim enters a state of shock/paralysis/cardiac arrest. You still feel everything from stage 1, but can no longer respond or control your body's responses. This is physically traumatic for the body and can cause permanent damage.

Death: A large enough dosage will cause death. People who are paralyzed and can't calm themselves down will overwork their own nervous system into the grave.

Peter's knockoff venom (Aurora) was a HUGE epidemic in his old world, and basically became part of most baddie's routines. Take a hit, get roided, go out, fight- and sometimes, die from the aftereffects. It was a hit with younger folks too, who enjoyed the sensation of slowing down time.

And because it was impure, the side effects from prolonged exposure were usually worse at lower doses, meaning nerve damage, muscle degradation and other permanent, crippling effects.
